What’s better than dressing up and going on a nice drive? When the roads lead you to rum tasting with your friends. It was a perfect day of rum, our roots, and roadside eats—so grab a seat and let’s get into it.

It’s rare when $2800 can get you a whole experience, and just an hour (and one toll $1000 each way) away from Kingston, the Worthy Park Estate Rum Tour is an easy, affordable day trip. Our tour guide took us through an informative walk-through of the estate’s history, the machinery, and the full process—from sugar cane to fermentation to bottling and shelf-ready rum.

Did I enjoy it? Yes. But I’ll be honest—it could’ve had a bit more wow factor. And I get it… how exciting can a seeing a Double Retort Pot Still really be? Still, I think the experience could benefit from making the information feel more alive and relatable rather than like a history lesson (which it kinda is). I would’ve loved to see the factory in full motion—machines running, people working, production in real time. It felt a bit like we caught everything on pause… because apparently, Saturdays are for rest, not rum making.
That said, the highlight of the tour? The rum tasting, of course. We got to try a selection of their signature blends and let me tell you—things got really buzzy, real fast. It was my first time trying their rum cream, and I was pleasantly surprised. Smooth, rich, a little dangerous…I might just have to cop a bottle for “guests” (and by guests, I mean me).

But beyond the sipping and swirling, there’s a deeper layer to experiences like this. Estates like Worthy Park are rooted in a history that isn’t all sweet. Sugar plantations in Jamaica were built on the backs of enslaved Africans, and while today we enjoy the polished tours and premium bottles, it’s impossible to ignore that origin. It made me think about legacy—how our ancestors worked these lands without choice, and how many families, like mine, moved away from that life entirely. My grandmother didn’t pass down land or a business, but she passed down something just as valuable: the push to seek opportunity beyond survival. And somehow, standing there sipping rum on the same kind of land they once labored on—it hits different.
After a few shots (because yes, we were sampling enthusiastically), the appetite kicked in right on cue. So naturally, the gang headed to a local jerk spot less than 10 minutes away from the estate—Grants Jerk Center.

Right on the roadside with a small, no-frills seating setup, Grants Jerk Center is the definition of simple and satisfying. Affordable prices, bold flavor, and that unmistakable jerk aroma pulling you in before you even step out of the car. We ordered jerk chicken, pork, and sausage—and everything was well-seasoned, smoky, and juicy. No gimmicks, just good food done right.
There’s something about pairing a curated experience like a rum tour with an authentic roadside stop that just balances the day perfectly. One gives you the story, the other gives you the soul.
All in all, it was a day well spent—good vibes, good company, and a reminder that sometimes the best experiences are just a short drive away.
Until next bite!
Whimsically, Vanessa
